Avon success at Tier 4 tournament

Under Bob Hammersley's experienced direction, a very successful Tier 4 tournament was held on 12 March. 120 players entered, including 27 from Avon, and 147 matches were played over the course of the day.

The highlight of the day for Avon was the women's doubles. The Avon pair of Tsz Yan Joyce Chan and Yajuan He won their group and reached the semi-finals, where they beat the Mid-Glamorgan pair of Emily Hung and Nerissa Liu 21-12 21-10.

Similarly, Avon's Yana Jaff and Abi Kemp reached the semi-finals where they beat the Hampshire/Cornwall pair of Holly Hammond and Ellie Watkinson 22-20 21-8.

In the final Tsz Yan Joyce Chan and Yajuan He took the first game 21-8, and held on to take a much closer second game 21-18. Gold and Silver medals to Avon.

In the men's singles, Avon were represented by 4 players and, with Harvey Thompson nursing an injury, the highlight was Jason Reading’s group match against Miles Starks of Worcestershire the eventual tournament winner. Jason narrowly lost in a tough 3 setter 15-21 21-17 14-21.

In the women's singles, Georgia Creed came second in her group,, only losing to the eventual tournament winner Emily Hung of Mid-Glamorgan.

In the men's doubles, the Avon pair of Ben Au and Kwok Kuen Wong did well to reach the quarter finals where they came up against the eventual losing finalists Miles Starks and Luke Peters of Worcestershire, who proved just a bit too strong.

In the mixed, Avon again did well with Jajuan He partnered with Shaotian Chen of Warwickshire reaching the quarter finals, along with Avon pairs Georgia Creed and Harvey Thompson, and Kimberly Wong and Laurence Williamson.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, and a big thank you to Bob and his team of helpers for running a fantastic tournament.
